Critical text

The background of Ana Prvački (b. 1976, Pančevo) ranges from music to theatre, architecture to art history. She uses performances and installations to explore social dynamics and sexual stereotypes, ecology, the aesthetics of consumption and mental health. During the last two years of the pandemic, Prvački has made watercolours become a daily practice, starting from their traditional links to natural history and science. As she likes to point out, on his journeys the famous explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was always accompanied by a painter of watercolours. This medium has been employed across history for the documentation of botanical and zoological species. The precision and the infinite expressive possibilities offered by watercolours, intimate and immediate at the same time, have prompted the artist to delve into her interest in the world of bees, evolution and the Paleolithic period, making drawings that stand out for their irony, non-conformism and delicate naïveté.

The artist’s voice

I commit to making my work as round as the earth and my performances as compressed as water. I aim for pedagogical meme pollination and maximum viewer titillation.
