Fully immersed in both the studio-based processes and allegorical potential of image-making, Hadi Fallahpisheh (b. 1987, Tehran) self-consciously uses art to reflect upon the contradictions of the immediate world around him. From non-photography to pottery, found objects to painting, he deploys methods of artmaking of his own ingenuity. For instance, photography is performed rather than taken with a camera to create light-sensitive images using a complex setup and routine in the dark. Yet, underlying all his research is a response to perceived and predetermined roles in society, from the child to the criminal, and his work is rife with protagonists¾often animals such as cats and mice¾that are stand-ins for figures of authority and victims.
