Marco Giordano

Critical text

Marco Giordano’s (b. 1988, Torino) work revolves around the investigation of intermediate space, understood as a psychological, physical, temporal, and liminal state. He deploys a polyphony of media, including performance, sculpture, poetry, and sound throughout his practice, often collaborating with professionals and non-professionals alike. For example, his sculptural installation To Disturb Somnolent Birds (2020) features a sound piece written and produced by artist, filmmaker and musician Luke Fowler (b. 1978, Glasgow). This installation focuses on hypnagogia¾a lucid phenomenon experienced between wakefulness and sleep. A series of coloured resin sculptures, which pulsate with fluctuating light, are displayed atop a replica of an improvised work bench in Giordano’s studio. Reminiscent of nightlights, the distorted silhouettes warp in and out of focus as if drowsy with the onset of sleep.
