Regina Gimenez

Regina Gimenez (b. 1966, Barcelona) has always been fascinated by the graphic design of children’s books and textbooks, especially the symbols contained in volumes on geography and astronomy. Starting with a circle, often used to represent planets, Gimenez develops a language of sunny colours and recurring forms that seem to be influenced by the historical avant-gardes. Born in Barcelona, like the great Catalan artist Joan Miró, her mind’s eye focuses on his vivid palette and soft forms. Gimenez creates an abstract world of great communicative force and visual impact: a cosmogony that lures the observer inside it, in a festival of charts and luminous rays. The development in concentric forms also suggests the geometries of primary colours of Sonia Delaunay, who in the years she spent in Spain absorbed knowledge of the applied arts, which she then utilized in her career in Paris. Gimenez has her own original way of taking inspiration from educational graphics: the triangles that indicate mountains, the circular charts showing percentages in coloured segments, are alphabets with which she is able to create new languages. The elegance and compositional precision of her creations embody a cosmic harmony of great energy and positive spirit.
