Present Future
Victoria Colmegna
Critical text
Victoria Colmegna’s (b. 1989, Argentina) practice is sprawling in scope¾as well as using formal mediums, such as painting and collage, she also makes architectural models based on her family’s former business, the Colmegna Spa in central Buenos Aires; manages a band of ex-boyfriends and recreates Francis Picabia’s catalogue raisonné as a line of knitted clothes. Colmegna explores the styles and communal dynamics that define groups and subcultures. For instance, her latest paintings and sculptural found objects are based on Emma Cline’s book The Girls, which follows a Californian teenager who joins a Manson Family-like cult in the 1960s. The artist reimagines the look and feel of the time as seen through a fictious character’s eyes. Throughout her practice, art is used to be copied or fan-made, and often treated as a malleable form in and of itself to suite the artist’s mood.
The artist’s voice
My work engages with the styles, dynamics and furniture that dominate closed systems like cliques and parties, self-critically reflecting the making of the ‘young’ artist’s oeuvre as a self abusive practice.
