After having lived for a number of years in Canada, Andrea Sala (b. 1976, Como) began to study the blankets of the Hudson s Bay Company in the northwest of the country, a commodity for trade since 1779 with local populations, but also a feature of d cor and dress. The research on these and other blankets, their symbols and legends, has opened up new horizons for the artist regarding the customs and different folk traditions of North America and the American National Parks. The artist takes great interest in their social role, imagining them on paper as places set aside to conserve the memory of a voyage, with its pauses and picnics. Made with pastels, tempera and graphite on coated paper, Sala s blankets reference the idea of stratification of private and collective memory, through geometric figures and vivid hues.
I like to think and highlight, this and that. I don't like shouted forms but elegant and discreet underlining of existing forms. Highlighting allows me to match my eye to the sensitive surface.
