David Gilbert s (b. 1982, New York) images sit within the framework of photography, but his compositions are more reminiscent of painting. However, his work is not limited to photography, as it sits at the intersection of sculpture, drawing, painting, assemblage, and installation. He transforms spaces into backdrops and objects into temporary sculptures, often draping them with fabrics. The ephemeral nature of the cloths and their provisional supports give Gilbert s images a spontaneity and randomness, coupled with a studied lightness and grace. As such, they appear like theatrical scenarios, capturing fleeting scenes through various layers of material and colour.
I compose vignettes from materials like fabric, yarn, and paper- then I photograph them. The resulting images capture moments of spontaneity and accident paired with a studied airiness and grace.
