For Karolina Krasouli (b. 1984, Athens), drawing is like keeping a diary in which to record the passage of time in chromatic codes. The date of the making coincides with the title of the work, in a procedure of everyday intimacy. Her approach to paper starts with the drawing of a semi-transparent grid in graphite pencil, in which to insert coloured geometric patterns that repeat, forming a kaleidoscopic composition of a mental alphabet. The repetition of certain patterns of colours and the gestural character of the handmade sign set the rhythm of a meditative serial method that depicts the timing and the modus operandi intrinsic to the works. The alternation of geometric forms and their related colours marks the rhythmical cadence of the composition, influencing the visual perception of the observer. Close to the work, we can notice the quality of the manual stroke and the forms, while at a distance the visual effect is attenuated in relation to a colour that seems more uniform and almost minimal, playing with the characteristics of optical perception of forms and colours as they interact with light and distance.
Situated at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, my work aims closer at representing optical phenomena related to memory and language: seriality, intimacy, syntax, projection field, diary.
