Through watercolours with soft tones of grey, Radenko Milak (b. 1980, Travnik) emphasizes the gap between the history narrated in the photographs of the international press, and the intimate dimension of everyday life, often concealed with every effort possible. With a preference for the urban context and the scenarios of large, anonymous apartment buildings, Milak conveys to us the despair and solitude of the contemporary era. As in a film loop, everyday life is portrayed in an infinite flow of images that echo the aesthetics of photography without any traces of social contact. Through a process of selection and absorption of images circulating on the internet, the artist presents a reality reduced to its barest essence, rehabilitated through watercolours, one of the most private and intimate media of expression. The works are a hymn of resistance against the greyness of a certain photographic approach, in pursuit of content that is often disassociated from the original image to the point of vanishing.
My practice as an artist has always been heavily influenced by the idea that our relationship to the world and its history is largely determined by the uninterrupted and continuous flow of images that documents the world.
