Sergio Breviario (b. 1974, Bergamo) has been drawing since he was born, and today he can be considered an incredible virtuoso of the pencil, and of the display of works on paper which he designs as an integral part of his work. The collages of The Belle of the Ball (2015 23) are composed of cut-out spheres of paper transformed into bodies of timeless horsemen fighting against antithetical slender figures, perhaps to conquer the belle of the ball for which the series is named. The cut-outs stem from the scanning of polaroids shot by the artist years ago in the quarries of Carrara, and originally represented the melancholy machinery used for the cutting and shaping of marble, though in this context we can glimpse distant presences of industrial and mechanical scenarios, in sharp contrast with the delicacy of the figures and poses. The paper printed in black and white, cut into rounded forms, acts as counterpoint to the graphite shadows cast on the white space, triggering a game of very refined balances between overturned tips of cones that seem to challenge each other in a dance, between elegant spirograph decorations and delicate skits of surreal everyday life.
I never deal with the meaning of a form. I don t care. I approach different things, creating a relationship, a sympathy.
