Tenant of Culture is the name of the practice of Hendrickje Schimmel (b. 1990, Arnhem). As a graduate in fashion and textile design, she works within the tension between sculpture and couture, but from the perspective of contemporary art. By deconstructing and recomposing manufactured garments, Tenant of Culture explores the ways in which ideological frameworks become materialized, and how clothing is produced, circulated, and marketed. The materials she uses for her textile assemblages come from varying stages of the garment production cycle, as well as secondary recycling platforms and waste. It is the post-consumer waste of industry, which takes on new symbolic value in the alternative circuit of art.
By disassembling and rebuilding manufactured garments, I examine the ways in which ideological frameworks materialise in methods of production, circulation and marketing of apparel.
