Bastien Gachet (b. 1987, Geneva) creates immersive installations that combines industrial processes, spatial interventions, and vernacular objects. His work challenges the notion of site-specificity by transforming modular, soulless spaces like fair booths into ambiguous environments drawing on industrial mimicry. His installations play on the ambivalence of what is real and fake, with objects that appear infrastructural yet exist in liminal spaces. These non-spaces never fully become one thing or another but maintain a state of ambiguity that prompts reflection. A key aspect of Gachet’s installations is their dramaturgy, which he thinks of in terms of non-linear time. His architectural interventions create a journey for the audience, guiding visitors through pathways and revealing elements gradually. These spaces reflect oppressive totalitarian architecture and evoke both fascination and disgust with the space the viewers find themselves in. By creating infrastructures that allow for pauses and moments of reflection, Gachet’s installations invite viewers to remain in a durational space, experiencing an inconclusive journey and questioning the speed of contemporary life. Through this poetic process, he crafts resonant environments where meanings and relationships continually shift.
