Central to the multidisciplinary practice of Costanza Candeloro (b. 1990, Bologna) is the exploration of the fluidity and depth of language. She employs writing both as a creative catalyst and a subject of experimentation, and transforms newly written or appropriated texts into visual symbols that evolve into sculptures, installations, and performances. This process embodies a continuous evolution, marked by intuitive action aimed at making the original content disappear. Candeloro integrates literary and cinematographic motifs into her works, and radically reformulates, rewrites, and rethinks them. At times, she overwrites this source material with other stories, images, and tales as part of her cross-media vocabulary. Other times, fictional scenarios intersect with personal references and memories, moving her framework to the personal and beyond. This interplay between various media and languages shapes Candeloro’s practice to what she calls “metaliterary plasticity”—embodying multiple narratives and serving as an investigative tool to destabilize gender prejudices and constructs. Her work not only retains echoes of its diverse narrative origins but also acts as a device for exploration, capable of challenging societal norms and biases.
My work explores writing as both a generative element and a subject of research, which is transformed into sculptures, installations, and performances.
