Inspired by the imaginary world of Lovecraft, Yökai supernatural creatures, the comics of Moebius and the anime of Studio Ghibli, José Castiella (b. 1987, Pamplona) makes a series of drawings about imaginary existences in new worlds after the collapse. Paying homage to the artistic tradition of coffee stains on paper, the artist unleashes his most hidden dream impulses, ranging from the aesthetic of RPG video games to the veneration for Hieronymus Bosch. The new population of the next world, which takes stimuli from the failure of the present world, stems from the encounter between the randomness of the coffee stain, embodying the Dada spirit, and the artistic intervention on the trail of the most terrifying sci-fi scenarios.
In my work, I explore new life forms after collapse, reflecting on the unknown. My characters emerge through chance, blending art history, RPGs, cosmic horror, and anime, creating a sci-fi world of hidden impulses.
