Louisa Gagliardi (b. 1989, Sion) investigates the complex relationship between digital intimacy and physical human connection, and highlights the paradox of feeling both connected and alienated in the digital era. Her paintings oscillate between the mysterious and the mundane, and depict characters and landscapes that probe the desire for real human interaction in a technology-saturated world. Gagliardi’s work delves into the impacts of globalization and urbanization on human life. She portrays the intricacies of contemporary existence, where people navigate fluid identities and relationships in a constantly evolving environment. She examines the liminal space where reality and fiction intersect, and emphasizes the contrasts between the tangible and the digital, the real and the imagined, and the intimate and the impersonal. Starting as digital compositions, her creations are transferred onto vinyl and transformed with a gel medium, which creates a texture of ghostly brushstrokes that encourages viewers to look beyond the surface. Often, Gagliardi pushes the boundaries of the two-dimensionality of her medium even further and makes her painting unfold into space.
The presentation at Artissima is the second chapter of the show Deep Breaths first shown at the Cultural Center Strombeek in Belgium last March and builds upon my ongoing interest in the liminal space.
