Nadine Fecht (b. 1976, Mannheim) studied experimental drawing at the Bauhaus University in Weimar after majoring in archaeological drawing at Humboldt University and the University of Fine Arts in Berlin. She has always had a passion for drawing, closely connected with the use of the intrinsically democratic qualities of paper as a medium. Fecht brings out aspects related to society, such as the economic value embodied by banknotes or price labels on products. In particular, in the work Surplus for many years she has collected fluorescent price stickers for foods and other consumer goods. Each label is the symbol of an individual, whose value is influenced by the logic of the marketplace. The title of the series refers to the concept of excess, the possibility of an existence that considers the intrinsic value of every individual, beyond the logic of profit and the conventional attribution of value.
In my seemingly minimalist politically motivated practice in the field of expanded conceptual drawing, I deal with the relationship of the individual to society, and related constructions of value and unvalue, self-worth and identity. I am particularly interested in situations of upheaval, unstable states - conditions that are in flux.
