Oskar Holweck (1924–2007, St. Ingbert) is considered one of the pioneers of experimentation on paper, as well as being one of the most representative exponents of German Concrete Art, who was also a member of Group Zero in the 1950s. For Holweck working on paper means experimenting on the material between shadow and light. The surface of the sheet is rippled and moved by the artist in various ways: cutting, folding, scratching, crumbling, collage, ripping, perforation, burning. Industrial paper comes to life in three dimensions, taking sculptural and chiaroscuro qualities. His works were ongoing experiments crossing many decades, and they remain new and coherent at the same time with the particularities of the material. Today they are pale, timeless masterpieces, where white is the non-colour of origin.
My main concern is to extract inherent forms from a material and to make visible the effect of light on surfaces, in hollow spaces and akin to the properties of the material itself.
