Pae White (b. 1963, Pasadena) presents the series of the so-called Smoke Drawings, paper carvings made with a sophisticated technique that removes a layer of colour from the base below, using a method developed in dermatological medicine. Like clouds of smoke, these works on paper are the result of micro-abrasions done by laser, and they were originally installed by the artist in a room covered in leaves, based on memories of a neglected fireplace, where the gathering around the fire then gave way to leaves blown by the wind, falling in the autumn rain. White’s works are thus able to evoke rather than describe atmospheres suspended between truth and fiction, through nostalgic impressions.
For a number of years, my practice has focused on an exploration of the neglected, the forgotten, the elusive, the spaces between things, even the things between things. I am equally drawn to the temporary, the fleeting, to the ephemera of everyday life.
