Simnikiwe Buhlungu (b. 1995, Johannesburg) is an artist interested in knowledge productions—how it is produced, by whom, and how it is disseminated. Buhlungu locates socio-historical and everyday phenomena by navigating these questions and their inexhaustible potential answers via research-based methodologies. Through this, she maps points of cognizance, which situate various layers of awareness as reverberated ecologies. Buhlungu’s research materializes in the shape of text, print, video, and sonic pieces. Her multidisciplinary work often responds to the conditions or the ecologies of the site, format or occasion concerned, with which she questions latent and entrenched understandings and perceptions of infrastructures, settings, and environments. For past projects, the artist has been contemplating, among others, phenomena that exist “through” the presences of everyday sonic utterances, puddles as an epistemological pause, and communicative rhythms people are usually not attuned to, like those of bees. Lately, she has been listening to djelis, writing notes of appreciation to Nana et Baniel, thinking about geologic burps and attempting to distribute publication contributions to Simunye Resource Works (a publishing house that is forever yet-to-exist).
I am interested in navigating personal and socio-historical narratives that present themselves as a complex web of [re]imagined engagements that surround, but are not exclusive to, experiences embedded in the complexity of knowledge production(s) - that are (un)written, (un)spoken, (un)heard and made (in)visible.
