The Berlin-based Peruvian artist Paolo Salvador (b. 1990, Lima) conveys a visually engaging dream-like atmosphere drawing from his Latin-American identity and transforming the personal into allegorical. His large-scale figurative paintings bring together suspended environments in which human and animal figures coexist, and imagery from Greek and Mesoamerican mythology are reallocated in contemporary discussions. Salvador’s practice is evocative of his memories and often departs from studio selfies to recall stories of diaspora and migration. His works’ eerie and somewhat mystical presence seem to depict at the same time a pre-linguistic past and a future in which human beings are no longer perceived as exceptional.
The artist’s voice
Paintings are built of different layers, and I think feelings are codified in them as well: paintings communicate not only what artists want to express, but allow viewers to be part of them and to contribute at a more complex level.
