Present Future
Roberto Fassone
Critical text
Roberto Fassone (b. 1986, Savigliano) aims to deconstruct the mechanisms related to the art system, through a constant use of paradox and humor. Exploiting the creative potential of play, the artist reduces and exemplifies the language of contemporary art to bring out its simultaneous and dichotomic characteristics of complexity and simplicity: charades, lip-syncing or video montage become tools through which to approach systems of thought, while reasserting the inseparable bond between art and life. His works resemanticize actions, circumstances and objects to transform every aspect of the real into a creative opportunity poised between nonsense and surrealism. In this way, different worlds such as philosophy, sports and video games build new expressive codes aimed at the absurd. Through videos, performances, music and play, Fassone attempts to reveal and debunk the casuistry of our approach to life and, as a result, to art. At Present Future Fassone shows part of a series of photographs titled Le origini dell’Universo: fifteen surfers on the Pacific coast unexpectedly reflect on the existence and birth of the cosmos.
The artist’s voice
The universe is absurd, a word that WE invented. My art is about that. And about thinking, dancing, thinking, dancing, thinking, thinking, King Diamond, thinking, dancing, dancing.
